Chunhua Weng, PhD, FACMI
Professor of Biomedical Informatics
Columbia University
Dr. Chunhua Weng is a Professor of Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University, where she has been a faculty member since 2007. Before arriving at Columbia, she obtained a bachelor degree in computer science from Nankai University, P. R. China, a master’s degree in Information and Computer Science from University of California at Irvine, and a Ph.D. in Biomedical and Health Informatics from University of Washington at Seattle. Dr. Weng has pioneered knowledge-based and data-driven methods for optimizing clinical research participant selection and for matching clinical studies to research volunteers, and has jointly invented GIST (Generalizability Index of Study Traits) version 1.0 and 2.0 with Dr. Patrick Ryan and her research team. Dr. Weng has also contributed open-source software for parsing unstructured narratives in the public ClinicalTrials.gov. She has published extensively in clinical trial knowledge management, text knowledge engineering, EHR phenotyping and cohort identification, clinical data quality, and evidence appraisal. Dr. Weng co-leads Columbia University’s eMERGE (Electronic Medical Records and Genomics) and Biomedical Data Translator projects and has an active R01 from the National Library of Medicine for Bridging the semantic gap between clinical research eligibility criteria and clinical data. In recognition to her significant contributions to the field of biomedical and health informatics, Dr. Weng was elected as a fellow of the American College of Medical Informatics (ACMI) in 2015.
